Why Winners Fail To Collect Legal Judgments
Brace yourself, you will probably not be happy when you read this: I have a dentist friend name Tom. Tom is a county employee, a civil servant practicing dentistry for Suffolk County, NY. He is divorced and has been paying alimony to his ex-wife for many years. The divorce decree requires that his alimony payments increase in direct proportion to any increase in his earned income. He hates his ex with a passion and hasn't seen her face or heard her voice for many years. Tom recently refused to accept a promotion to Department Director because it came with a very large salary increase. What? Yes, he refused the promotion and big salary increase. His real reason for rejecting the promotion is that his ex-wife would also benefit from his good fortune. Tom can't stand the idea of her having a share in his "windfall." When Tom told me about this I could not stifle myself, it just burst out of me. I yelled "...are you completely insane? You must be nuts!" I said a lot more too, things like "...go have your head examined..", and, "...what are you smoking?" My question to you, dear reader, is this: Are you preventing yourself from collecting on your legal judgment because you resent the idea that the folks that collect the debt owed to you will receive such a large fee for it? Wake up! Just know this now: they will earn every penny of their fee; if it was easy you would be doing it for yourself. 85% of Legal Judgments are NEVER collected because the "winners" of the lawsuits profoundly resent giving any of their hard-won, but uncollected money to a judgment recovery specialist or even a lawyer. Their reasoning is flawed. Here are bits and pieces of the thought process:
All of these thoughts and arguments are based in emotions and opinions that block and prevent the collection of at least a portion of the money that is owed by the debtors. Do you see the wisdom in the phrases that follow:
How much will you collect if you don't take intelligent action before the judgment expires? Is there a benefit to putting off taking appropriate action? You can't lose what you don't have.
